The Rebel Drive In

Date: Sometime in 2001

Today, I drove across town headed to Cleveland State College for a meeting. The sign company was removing the Rebel Sign from the old Rebel Property making way for a new business venture.

Note: The Rebel Sign has been refurbished and will soon be erected at the new location at 1010 South Lee Highway

I remember when my Dad moved the sign from its original location more north than where it was. He moved the sign about 1976 closer to the intersection after 25th Street was made a four lane. I am sure he moved it to make it more visible. Since we closed the Rebel a few months ago we have received many calls from people across the area wanting to purchase the sign. But, someday we might want to set in front of another location and start selling lottaburgers again. So, until then it will be placed in storage.

I wish I knew how many times the sign has been damaged by logging trucks going to Bowater Southern Paper Products in Calhoun. Many trucks have not negotiated that north bound turn properly and got to close to the brick planter that surrounded the sign. Sometime the trucker would stop and sometime they just kept going.

The removal of that sign marks a day of passing memories for many towns people. We so much appreciate the many comments and stories we receive from you. Thanks for the memories.
